The news out of Sydney this week is stirring the senses of food enthusiasts, particularly those with a penchant for Latin American cuisine. Morena, the acclaimed restaurant nestled in Martin Place, has unveiled an exciting new chapter for July: a featured menu dedicated to celebrating Peru’s National Independence Day, an annual observance on July 28th.
For this writer, the announcement carries a personal resonance. Having previously savoured Morena’s Brunch de Carnaval on another occasion, the restaurant’s commitment to authentic flavours is well-established. And as someone whose roots trace back to Peru, there’s an inherent warmth in seeing the rich tapestry of Peruvian cuisine highlighted. It’s a journey that often transports one back to the comforting aromas and vibrant tastes of family cooking.
From July 1st to July 31st, guests are invited to embark on the ‘Taste of Peru‘ menu, an experience priced at $120 per person. This carefully curated selection promises a delightful exploration of Peruvian classics, from the bright, zesty notes of Ceviche to the smoky, savoury depth of Anticucho. Beyond these beloved staples, the menu also showcases dishes designed to spotlight iconic Peruvian ingredients and flavours, offering a deeper dive into the country’s diverse landscape.
Among the tempting offerings are some of Morena’s celebrated dishes, including their Market fish ceviche, vibrant with aji limo leche de tigre and sweet potato, and the Ox tongue Anticucho, infused with Peruvian dried chillies. Adding another layer of intrigue is the Scallop tiradito, a testament to the Peruvian-Japanese fusion known as Nikkei cuisine, featuring a Nikkei dressing, crispy shichimi oil, and daikon. The main course promises to be a showstopper: succulent braised lamb shoulder in an adobo sauce, complemented by confit leeks, Peruvian yellow potatoes, creamy huancaina sauce, and Peruvian olives – a symphony of the country’s iconic flavours and native ingredients.
And no Peruvian celebration would be complete without its signature cocktail. Throughout July, Morena’s take on the Pisco Sour takes centre stage as the featured drink. Made with Barsol Quebranta Pisco, fresh lime, egg whites, and a touch of sugar, this iconic cocktail is more than just a drink; it’s a liquid reflection of the nation’s history and its adaptation to Spanish colonisation.
For those eager to experience this, reservations can be made via the Morena Sydney website, with walk-ins also warmly welcomed. The Morena ‘Taste of Peru’ Menu will be available Monday to Saturday for both lunch and dinner, running from July 1st to July 31st.
