Melbourne is about to feel a little bit like Los Angeles. On Friday 11 September, the Los Angeles Rams will play the first ever NFL regular season game held on Australian soil at the MCG, and in the days leading up to kickoff the Southbank Riverwalk is transforming into a full blown American football fan zone. Best part? It is free, it is open to everyone, and you do not need to know a single rule of the game to have a great time.
Here is everything happening around Melbourne’s biggest sporting crossover of the year, and why it is worth clearing your calendar for.
Rams House Takes Over the Riverwalk
From Thursday 10 September through Saturday 12 September, Crown Melbourne’s Riverwalk becomes Rams House: The LA Tailgate Experience, a joint activation between the Rams and Crown, who is stepping up as the Official Home of Los Angeles Rams Fans in Australia and the Official Fan Hotel for the week.
Think of it as LA’s most iconic sporting tradition, the pregame tailgate, dropped straight onto the Yarra. The setup is split into two parts.
The Tailgate brings the full parking lot party energy, complete with Chevrolet Silverados styled like an authentic American tailgate, a custom built GMC Yukon, a Rams branded lowrider, an LA inspired food truck, a bar, and merchandise for anyone wanting to walk away with a piece of the moment. Live entertainment runs throughout, including the Rams Cheerleaders, the Rams Mariachi band, and a DJ keeping the atmosphere going. Fans can also snap a photo with the actual Super Bowl LVI trophy, meet the team’s mascot Rampage, and cross paths with Rams Legends.
Two brand activations add some playful competition to the mix. Grapes From California is running a High Jump catching challenge inspired by Rams wide receiver Davante Adams, and National Storage has a trading card station where you can walk away with a custom card featuring your own photo.
The Deck, presented by Microsoft Surface, is where the view gets serious. It features a 22 yard floating football field on the water, a giant screen for watching the game itself, and a dedicated viewing area to soak up the occasion.
More entertainment and programming will be announced as game week gets closer, so keep an eye out if you are planning your visit.
A Legacy Beyond Game Day
The excitement is not just confined to the Riverwalk. On September 8 and 9, the Rams are running their inaugural Flag Football Community Day across select Victorian schools, part of a broader LA Rams ANZ Community Program designed to grow the sport at grassroots level long after the final whistle blows at the MCG.
The program will reach up to 50 Victorian government schools alongside a founding group of independent schools, with teacher training, student clinics, gala day experiences, and Rams Flag Football Starter Kits so schools can keep the momentum going. Built around the idea of “From Schoolyard to Stadium,” it is a nice reminder that this game week is about more than one night of football. It is meant to leave something behind for the next generation of Australian players.
You do not have to be a lifelong NFL fan to enjoy this one. Rams House is designed for total newcomers just as much as the diehards, and with the location right on the Riverwalk, it doubles as a great excuse for an evening out in Southbank regardless of your football knowledge. Free entry, great food, live music, and a genuinely rare bit of only in Melbourne novelty make this worth penciling into your September plans.
