Leon Bridges Is Bringing His Golden Voice Back to the Opera House Forecourt, and This Time We Get the Summer Sky Too.
There’s a particular kind of Sydney night I chase every summer: warm air off the harbour, the Opera House sails catching the last of the light, and a voice good enough to make you forget you’re standing in a crowd of strangers. On Friday 26 February, that voice belongs to Leon Bridges.
The Grammy winning singer songwriter is returning to Sydney, and this time he’s skipping the Concert Hall for the harbourside Forecourt, playing beneath the open summer sky. If you caught one of his three sold out Concert Hall shows back in 2022, you already know what kind of night this is going to be. If you didn’t, consider this your sign.
Bridges will be previewing songs from his fifth studio album, Happiness Anytime, out 25 September, alongside the catalogue of fan favourites that have made him one of the most distinct voices in modern soul.
The Fort Worth kid who became soul’s brightest new classicist
Here’s what I love about Bridges’ story: it barely reads like a pop star trajectory at all. He grew up in Fort Worth, Texas, working as a busser and a dishwasher at a downtown restaurant, playing open mic nights around town with no real plan beyond the next gig. A chance connection with a member of the band White Denim led to some early demo recordings, and within months he had a deal with Columbia Records. His 2015 debut, Coming Home, arrived sounding like it had been beamed in from a smoky 1960s soul revue, drawing instant comparisons to Sam Cooke and Otis Redding, and it earned him his first Grammy nomination straight out of the gate.
A few fun facts worth knowing before showtime:
He never left home. Despite touring the world, Bridges still lives in Fort Worth. He’s said the city keeps him grounded, letting him duck into a quiet dive bar on a Monday night and just be a regular guy.
His voice found him through his mother. The song that first defined his sound, “Lisa Sawyer,” was written about his mum, and it’s the track that convinced Columbia he was the real deal.
He’s shared a stage with an eclectic cast of legends. Think Chance the Rapper, Paul McCartney, Stephen Colbert and a former US president all in one night. Bridges has described those pinch me moments as never quite feeling real.
He’s stepped in front of the camera too. Bridges played civil rights era poet Gil Scott Heron in the 2018 film First Man and took a lead role in the 2023 drama The Young Wife.
Happiness Anytime brings him full circle. After the personal, folk leaning sound of his 2024 album Leon, this new record returns to the warmth of his debut while channelling the loose, sun soaked groove of his celebrated collaborations with Khruangbin. Expect long days and warm nights distilled into song.
A season built for golden hour listening
This Forecourt show is Bridges’ seventh Australian tour since he first landed here in 2016, and it slots him into a stacked summer lineup at the Opera House alongside Angus & Julia Stone, Dijon, Cat Power and Tara Clerkin Trio, with more names still to be announced. New Jersey artist 54 Ultra, the solo project of singer and producer John Anthony Rodriguez, opens the night with his blend of synthy indie rock and Latin soul, fresh off appearances at Coachella and Lollapalooza.
Sydney Opera House’s Head of Contemporary Music, Ben Marshall, put it best when he described Bridges’ rise here: from becoming the first contemporary artist to play the renewed Concert Hall in 2022, to now stepping onto the Forecourt for what he calls the natural next chapter. With lush brass, gospel arrangements and that golden voice echoing off the sails under the February stars, this isn’t shaping up to be just a concert. It sounds more like a communal exhale, the kind of night this city does better than almost anywhere else.
