Morena Sydney | Brunch de Carnavale

At Morena Sydney, the Brunch de Carnaval is not just a meal, it’s an experience, a vibrant celebration of Latin American cuisine and culture. On a sunny Saturday, my friend and I arrived for a long, leisurely brunch, unsure of what to expect but eager for an afternoon of indulgence. From the moment we walked through the door, the atmosphere was a little quiet, but it soon became lively yet intimate, as though we’d stepped into a cozy fiesta.

The service set the tone right away. Our server greeted us with a warm smile, effortlessly blending professionalism with genuine friendliness. They not only guided us through the menu but shared insights about the dishes, turning the meal into a storytelling experience. Their enthusiasm for the food was contagious and added a personal touch that elevated the entire visit.

The menu unfolded like with a journey, starting with small bites that immediately captured our attention. The cheese tequeños arrived golden and crispy, with just the right amount of cheese pull to make each bite irresistible. The rocoto chutney, a vibrant orange swirl, delivered a slow, building heat, a playful tango on the tongue. The beef empanadas were comfort food at its finest, flaky pastry encasing a flavourful filling. The chimichurri, a vibrant green pool, shimmered with olive oil, its herbaceous notes a little too oily, yet still a bright, fresh counterpoint to the deep, earthy beef.

Then came the prawns in black aguachile were delicious, a bold combination of smoky heat, briny freshness, and the velvety richness of avocado, served with a side of crisp tostada. It was one of those dishes that demands a moment of silence, just to savour its complexity. The charcoal-grilled skewers were equally impressive. The chicken skewer, smoky and tender, felt like a versatile classic, but the real star was the picanha skewer. Each bite was juicy and packed with the deep, savoury flavours that only expert grilling can achieve. It was a true highlight, the kind of dish you’d happily return for again and again.

The sides provided a spectrum of textures and flavours. The Argentinian flatbread was hearty and satisfying, perfect for soaking up the juices from the skewers. The quinoa hummus, while creamy, lacked the robust seasoning I’d hoped for, but the tomato solterito salad was a refreshing counterpoint. Its medley of sweet, juicy tomatoes, creamy goat curd, and crisp summer beans was like a burst of sunshine on the plate.

Desserts, though not included in the package, are worth every additional penny. The ricotta tart, a delicate, creamy cloud, was enlivened by the citrusy zing of mandarin and lemon crumble, the passionfruit ice cream a tropical dream. It was the dessert equivalent of a standing ovation. The Criollo 72% dark chocolate mousse, with its rich, velvety texture and intense cocoa flavour, leaned a touch too indulgent for me personally, but my friend’s enthusiasm for it was unmistakable.

To complete the experience, Morena offers a thoughtfully curated drinks menu. The Estrella Damm Mediterranean beer provided a crisp and refreshing start, while the NV Cavedon ‘Adelia’ Prosecco added a celebratory sparkle. The 2023 Rutini ‘Trumpeter’ Chardonnay was light and fruity, a perfect pairing for the seafood, and the Perez Cruz ‘Lingal’ Rosé brought a soft, floral note to the table. For those who love red wine, the 2023 Montevideo ‘Festivo’ Malbec was bold yet balanced, an ideal match for the skewers.

And if cocktails are more your style, you won’t be disappointed. The margarita, with its vibrant blend of mandarin and agave, was bright and refreshing, while the daiquiri delivered a classic zing of lime and rum that was simply delightful.

Our evening at Morena was further enriched by the insightful recommendations of Yohan, the sommelier, who guided us towards two exceptional bottles we purchased. His expertise added a layer of discovery to our dining experience, allowing us to explore the nuances of South American wines beyond the initial selections from the Brunch de Carnvale menu.
