Callao in Barangaroo promised a fusion of Japanese and Peruvian cuisines, and for $119 per person, it offers a 90-minute free-flowing beverage package alongside five sharing-style tapas dishes. While the concept is intriguing and the venue undeniably stylish, our experience left us with mixed feelings.

The restaurant’s ambiance is undeniably chic, with its modern decor creating a sophisticated atmosphere. However, the service was a notable letdown. Waitstaff seemed preoccupied, often looking down and appearing inattentive. This was particularly frustrating given the price point.

The food, on the other hand, was a highlight. The menu boasted a tempting array of dishes, and what arrived at our table certainly delivered on flavour.

The edamame with smoked salt was a classic starter and set the afternoon’s tone. The salmon ceviche was a refreshing burst of citrusy goodness. The tangy leche de tigre perfectly complements the richness of the salmon, while the toasted corn adds a satisfying crunch.

While the wagyu tri tip was tender and succulent, with the smokiness of the date teriyaki adding depth to each bite. The aji amarillo mayo and togarashi bring a subtle heat. The smoked ‘Jack’s Creek’ black angus short rib skewer was a standout, complemented beautifully by the fresh horseradish and wasabi leaves providing a zesty contrast, cutting through the richness of the meat. Lastly, the yucca chips provided a satisfying crunch and a spicy kick with the chili mayo.

Despite the delicious food, a sense of disappointment lingered. For the price, we expected a more substantial dining experience. While the tapas were flavourful, the portions felt somewhat small, leaving us wanting more. The 90-minute free-flowing beverage package was a nice touch, but it couldn’t fully compensate for the overall feeling of being underwhelmed.

Callao offers a unique dining experience, but it falls short in terms of service and portion size, especially considering the price point. The a la carte menu does look good and the price point per dish seems reasonable. If you’re looking for a stylish venue with delicious food, Callao might be worth a visit.
