Campari Negroni Month

This September, YCK Laneways is raising a glass to the iconic Negroni, transforming its bustling precinct into a month-long celebration of this classic cocktail. In partnership with Campari, YCK Laneways is expanding the annual Negroni Week into a full month of events, inviting Sydneysiders to explore the city’s best small bars and discover fresh twists on the famous drink.

My own introduction to the Negroni happened in Florence, Italy, on a hot afternoon. After a day of sightseeing, I found myself at a cafe in the Piazza della Signoria, looking for a way to cool down. It was there that I had my first Negroni, a vibrant, crimson drink that was both bitter and refreshing. It was a simple and memorable moment that introduced me to a drink that has since become a global classic.

The Perfect Negroni: A Timeless Classic

What makes the Negroni so special is its simplicity. The secret to a perfect Negroni lies in three ingredients, poured in equal parts. The original recipe, created over 100 years ago, calls for Campari, which provides its signature bitter edge and vibrant colour.

The Recipe
1 oz Campari
1 oz gin (a London Dry Gin works best)
1 oz sweet vermouth

Pour all ingredients into a mixing glass with ice. Stir until well-chilled, then strain into a rocks glass over a large ice cube. Garnish with an orange slice or an orange peel.

What to Expect at Negroni Month

This year, YCK Laneways is taking the celebration to the next level. Each of the collective’s participating venues will be serving not only the classic Negroni but also two bespoke variations. A select few will even offer non-alcoholic versions.

Beyond the drinks, the precinct will come alive with a series of activations, including live music, masterclasses, and roving performers. It’s a chance for both seasoned Negroni lovers and curious newcomers to immerse themselves in the rich culture surrounding this iconic cocktail while supporting Sydney’s local hospitality scene.

“Whether you’re a Negroni purist or curious first-timer, Negroni Month at YCK Laneways is a chance to showcase our precinct’s creativity, community, and love of this classic,” said YCK Laneways Vice President Karl Schlothauer. “After all, there’s no Negroni without Campari.”

Negroni Month is a continuation of the global Negroni Week, an annual charity initiative now in its 13th year that has raised over $4 million for charitable causes. So, you can enjoy a delicious drink while supporting a good cause.

Participating venues include Burrow Bar, Esteban, Kahii, Button Bar, Kuro Bar and Dining, The Duke of Clarence, Vina Bar, and many more. Be sure to explore the entire laneway network spanning York, Clarence, and Kent Streets to discover all the unique creations on offer.
