On a road trip to Wine and Forage in Cowra’s wine region as it’s September and Spring is in the air.
We all love a drop of vino and delicious fresh produce – somehow everything tastes better in the country. But honestly, I do like to know where and how my wine and food is made from. Cowra Tourism offers just that. A Wine & Forage Tour that takes you on a journey to the scenic wine region stopping at the cellar door and meeting with the winemakers.
The tour started at the visitor centre and our first stop is Antonio D’Onise of Antonio’s Vineyard. Where we go on a wander through the vineyard, with our tasting glass ready at hand. Antonio talks through the importance of organic and vegan practices he implements in growing his grapes. Wines to look out for is their new ‘free*’ shiraz and chardonnay range. *Free from sulphate and preservatives.
The group was then greeted by winemaker Sam Statham from Rosnay Organic Farm & Vineyard (part of the Rivers Roads Organic Farm). Sam took us on a wander through his olives and fig orchard before he spoke about his organic wines on offer. Side note: Sam has an original farmhouse for farm stay accommodation. “Farming organically is possible without chemicals. Feed the soil, not the plant”. Ones to definitely try: Sparkling Chardonnay, Garage Wine Number 7, Fig Preserve and Olive Paste.
The last stop for the afternoon is at Wallington Wines for a seasonal lunch and for the final wine tasting. Everything about this biodynamic winery speaks ‘care and family values’. Steve Mobbs, winemaker speaks about the purity of the fruit and principles in making the wines. The matriarch of Wallington Wines, Margaret shared the unique straw bale cellar door was established in 1999 and we will be having lunch under the pergola – gourmet homemade wood fire pizzas. Side note if you are looking to stay, they have a restored Pise Farm Cottage from the 1890s.
The 2019 Cowra Wine & Forage tours will run throughout Spring and is definitely worth evry penny. You are also welcome to purchase wine and produce from each of the cellar doors aswell.
