Top 5 Things to Do in Bourail, New Caledonia

New Caledonia

I don’t know about you but when I travel overseas, I can’t sit idle for too long in a hotel room. With so much to do and see, I am always creating a list of adventures for every destination. Recently, I was fortunate enough to travel to New Caledonia and stay at the Sheraton Deva Spa and Golf Resort. Located in the Deva Domain, the area is quite secluded and unpopulated but there was still a whole lot of activities to do.

So here are my Top 5 Things to Do in Bourail, New Caledonia.

Play some golf

New Caledonia has four golf courses spread across its main island and staying at a golf resort, how could I not play a game? The Sheraton’s Exclusive Golf Course is made up of 18-holes, each with their own unique view of the area – whether it’s glimpses of blue lagoon water or the backdrop of lush green forest. The golf course also has a 30 box driving range for those who don’t want to spend all day putting around. It’s suited for pros and amateurs and being connected to the resort provides the perfect opportunity to wind down after a day of golfing.

Go snorkelling

New Caledonia has the second-longest double-barrier coral reef in the world after the Great Barrier Reef. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and with its immense diversity of marine life and exceptional natural beauty, it is a great spot to go snorkeling. The Glass Bottom Boat Poe-Deva is the best way to do this. The hour and a half boat tour takes you out to the reef with a guided explanation along the way. Provided with flippers, masks, and snorkels, you can swim amongst the colourful fish you wouldn’t be able to see otherwise. Don’t forget your underwater camera for this one.

Spend a day at the beach

Picture laying on the white sand and the sun on your back, with nothing but the sound of the ocean in your ears. With 13 kilometres of pristine coastline, you could spend hours laying on the sand of Poe Beach, the longest beach on the west coast of New Caledonia. The water is calm due to the barrier created by the reef so it is ideal for water sports like swimming, kayaking or paddle-boarding.

Relax at the Deep Nature Spa at the Sheraton Deva

An overseas getaway is an ideal time to focus on one’s wellbeing and there is nothing more relaxing than a spa day. The Deep Nature Spa is a European brand, created by Algotherm Cosmetics. They have two locations on the main island of New Caledonia (one in Noumea and one at the Sheraton Deva) offering massages, spa treatments, facials and specialised packages. They also have a fitness centre and jacuzzi.

Follow a hiking trail

Pack your walking shoes and go for a hike up the hills of the Deva Domain. Less than a kilometre from the Sheraton Resort entrance, lies the beginning of some incredible hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking tracks. These trails offer breathtaking views of the terrain that overlook the mountains, resort and tranquil reef. You might even come across some of the wildlife – birds, deer and wild pigs. I recommend watching the sunrise to see something truly magical.
