Merivale and Summer Bright Lager are excited to announce the return of Sunday Sundown, the live music experience at dusk, this summer. Featuring sixteen free live music events from 27 November to 26 February, Sunday Sundown will showcase thirty-two Australian including Jarryd James, Client Liaison, PNAU and The Bamboos at the sun-soaked Coogee Rooftop and The Newport. The event series will also feature epic New Year’s Day and Australia Day celebrations with jam-packed line-ups at both waterside venues.
Launching in January 2016, Sunday Sundown was created to bring live music back to the forefront of Sydney’s enviable summer and provide an exciting platform to showcase great local talent. From the Eastern Suburbs to the Northern Beaches, the series provides a stage for artists to not only cut their teeth and perform hotly-tipped tracks, but mix up their signature sounds with stripped backed sets and acoustic sessions. This year, the line-up features some of the hottest local acts on the Australian airwaves, including three 2016 J Award nominees – Montaigne, Kuren and Ngaiire.
Coogee Rooftop, the stunning oasis with an unrivalled view of Coogee Beach, opens the series with Aussie hip hop legend Tuka on 27 November. The music continues with the melodic bass of Basenji (DJ set) on 11 December and Sydney’s party tune purveyors Yolanda Be Cool on 8 January. The irrepressible queen of Australian dance music Nina Les Vegas headlines on 22 January, before innovative producer Sampology and Melbourne hip hop outfit Remi close out the Coogee series on 5 and 19 February, respectively. Sunday Sundown at Coogee Pavilion also features a killer line-up of support acts each weekend including Swindail, Running Touch, Generik, Dom Dolla, Dro Carey, Noah Slee and Kuren.
Sunday Sundown kicks off at The Newport with the masters of infectious nineties synth pop, Client Liaison, on 4 December. The bold and beautiful tones of Montaigne grace the peninsula on 18 December, before a co-headline of two of the hottest new artists coming out of Triple J this year, Jack River and Middle Kids, on 15 January. A special soon-to-be-announced act performs a smashing DJ set on 29 January, followed by folk songstress Ngaiire on 12 February and nineties funk and hip-hop exponents Skunkhour on 26 February. Newport headliners will be supported every weekend by the likes of Confidence Man, Hein Cooper, Jack River, Sable and Sons of the East.
Sunday Sundown takes over both venues on New Year’s Day, celebrating the arrival of 2017 with Sydney electro maestros PNAU (DJ set) at Coogee Rooftop and the velvet-voiced Jarryd James at The Newport. Sunday Sundown also marks a massive Australia Day, with Adelaide synth fiend Luke Million firing up in the east and acclaimed funk and soul band The Bamboos igniting the north.
