The Stuffed Beaver an already popular Canadian dive bar in Bondi has opened its second location in lower north shore. Located in Crow’s Nest I decide to pay my first visit to this rustic no nonsense bar.
The exterior is modest and you would nearly miss it from the outside but what do you expect it’s a dive bar after all!
The owner Jonny greets us and makes you feel right at home. We have a quick chat about the new location before we get down to the food. The lower north shore location is a newly built up area which fits in with the look and feel of the Stuffed Beaver brand. The new location also gives people a chance to get the beaver experience without having to head down to Bondi.
Upon having a good look around the interior has a lot of character, as soon as you walk in you’re greeted by various bric-a-brac hanging from the walls including BMX bikes and vintage skateboards which adds to its relaxed charm. Nestled in the corner are some fond old Arcade games which will transport you back to your childhood. There is also a massive TV screen which gives it a sports bar/ rock bar meets American diner feel.
There is some empty wall space but Jonny tells me they want to encourage the local community to donate their own items to hang on the walls in a typical dive bar style.
The food stays true to the motherland with some Canadian specialities such as “Poutine” consisting of gravy, melting cheese and fries. In true Canadian style everything is deep fried including a starter dish of fried pickles “Frickles” which you must try. The burgers are made with Wagyu beef and I tried their standout dish on the menu the tongue in cheek “Make Americana Great Again” burger which is a monster pattie and not for the faint hearted.
A partnership with Philter brewery means they have a well-stocked bar full of craft beers but they also serve a small selection of cocktails including the “Bloody Ceaser” the Canadian version of the Bloody Mary which is sure to cure any hangover.
If you’re looking for a quiet date spot this place isn’t for you. However you’ll love it if you’re looking for the latest hipster hangout, or for a few beers and a place to watch the match with some indulgent Canadian food!
