Rood Food at The Imperial Erskineville

rood food Imperial Erskineville

The Imperial Erskineville has just launched this year’s iteration of Rood Food – a stunningly sensuous exploration of food and flair, with what they describe as “dirty dishes, kinky cocktails and devilish drag”, that’s running until the end of October.

The Imperial has been an LGBT+ icon since 1983, and this risque event is as popular as it is cheeky. The area in front of the stage is packed out as we arrive, and we’re guided to our seats by the Dominatrix/Maître D Sunday Best, fully equipped with whip and paddle – which she immediately puts to use on us.

Sunday Best warns us to strap in tight, and soon we can see why – the devilishly raunchy trio Etcetera Etcetera, Ruby Slippers and Riot take to the stage dressed to the nines and performing stunning moves in high heels that I couldn’t imagine being able to do in bare feet. Meanwhile, the first act of the tantalizing menu is served – a yonic vegan pate, cheesy ‘bad balls’ and, in an unusual twist, a sensual ASMR experience dubbed ‘The Temptress’, where we don gloves and headphones, following instructions from the dish itself to construct a stunning coconut ceviche. It’s not something I’ve ever experienced before, but it was a welcome and unique experience, and one that I’m sure will be seen all over Sydney before long.

The show continues, with blindfolded volunteers constructing a banana split with the guiding hands of Riot & Ruby Slippers, as well as another stunning series of lip-synced dance routines that left us all with our jaws on the floor. The rest of the menu was similarly received, with a vegan ‘big banger’ sausage, pepper-roasted lamb and a series of desserts, culminating in the ‘Panna Knockers’ – an event I simply have to leave up to the photos to describe. The kinky cocktails were truly revolutionary, with flavours designed to complement the meal and the show.

All in all, the evening was an incredible experience, and I can see why Rood Food has been such a resounding success – the girls were incredible, the performances immersive and interactive, and the hotel staff were simultaneously efficient and knowledgeable about the food and the show itself. This gorgeous collaboration of sense and sexuality will be running every Wednesday & Thursday night (and two Sunday shows) until the end of October, so you’ll have to get in quick not to miss out, and risk disappointing the whip of Sunday Best.
