I survived the ROC Race Sydney

ROC Race Sydney

Sometimes I really should think about what I have opted in for, haha. I’m the sort of guy who will try anything once (maybe twice) and on Sat 25 Feb I ran an obstacle challenge. The ROC Race, aka the Ridiculous Obstacle Challenge Race took place at Sydney Showgrounds and I wasn’t alone in the madness.

This comical challenge reminded me of the reality game show, Wipeout, where contestants try to make through the 5km run through a series of obstacles designed to knock you down in hilarious fashion.

We arrived at Sydney Olympic Park in Sydney with a cool breeze and a crowd of colourful outfits. My mates Alex, @wanderlustwatchesofficial, and Craig, @craigontoast were ready to face the inflatable challenge that lied ahead.

At the starting line, we were pumped and ready to run through the foam and with warning from radio announcer from 2DayFM, “don’t jump onto the starting foam, concrete is hard”. Wise words!

There were no mud pits, electric shocks, cammando trenching under barb wire, but be prepared to get wet.

The obstacles:
Sky High: I call this the moon bounce challenge
Foam of Fury: a slip and slide with a foam machine
The Sweeper: climb up and run across a padded walkway without getting knocked by the rotating arms.
Leap of Faith: this took a minute or two to jump off the 3m summit
Cool Runnings: hold on to your hats, it’s a totally tubular ride that left me laughing for more
Barrel Bounce: you do need a good running momemtum and bounce to jump over the multiple barrels.
Badger Wall: if the walls are too hard to get over, head over to the ‘step’ to help you over the wall.
Aqua Drag: another slip and slide to a pool waiting at the end.
Wrecking Balls: not quite Miley Cyrus but move quickly across the plank, lose your balance or get hit by a giant ball.
The Drop: army crawl though the first section and slide down the drop
Jump Balls: this was hard and not mandatory
The Hippo: the final 4 story slide to victory and through the finishing line.

This was a more a fun run and not as tough or a time challenged like Tough Mudder or Spartan Race I painfully went through.

I have lots of fun and was really glad I did it with some friends. I would have liked some of the obstacles to be a little more challenging. Oddly enough the wait at each of the obstacles weren’t that bad and perfect for the family.

After the race, we headed to The Brewery at Novotel Sydney Olympic Park for a celebratory chicken schitnzel and beer.

We did capture our shenanigans on our GoPros and look forward to sharing it with you soon. Thanks again to my mates Alex and Craig for joining me for a fun Saturday morning.
