Walking into KOA Wellness Centre after a busy and stressful morning, I immediately felt a sense of serenity and knew I would need to force myself to relax and unwind if I was going to make the most of this experience.

I was greeted by the founder Shaun who built the centre out of his own personal experience with injury and recovery. Shaun suffered a back injury and after struggling to heal both mentally and physically, he travelled abroad and discovered innovative ways of healing and he’s never felt better. He then brought these concepts back to Sydney in an effort to start healing others and genuinely make a difference in people’s lives.

Ready to start my experience, Shaun directed me to the float therapy room where a giant egg-like pod awaited me. I was given a run-down on the session – change into a bikini (or opt to go in naked), complimentary earplugs and lighting options. The floating pod is filled with magnesium-rich water and Epsom salts to keep you buoyant and the room is completely soundproof to help you switch off.

Switch off I did, with a sense of feeling like I was floating through space, I think I could have stayed in there for hours. Upon exiting the pod I felt like I was floating through the air and my skin felt silky smooth.

Next on the itinerary was the infrared sauna which was a bit of solitary bliss, but is it worth all the hype? Unlike traditional saunas that feature steam or dry heat to warm the room, infrared saunas use infrared heat lamps in confined spaces to raise body temperature directly. However, still, be prepared to get a bit hot and sweaty, but not to the same extent as a traditional sauna, this one was a lot more manageable. It was also a great space for a bit of meditative yoga and I left feeling refreshed, revived, and better than ever.

Looking to enhance the benefits of my sauna treatment, I then headed for the Cryotherapy chamber. Going in I was a little freaked out at first! The idea of being subjected to negative 90 degrees was a little chilling, to say the least. However the treatment was quick and painless and coming out I felt light as a feather, and a bit tingly which was all normal and well. The process is said to promote pain reduction and flush any toxins from the skin, muscle tissue and joints, as well as smooth and tighten skin.

Overall, I left KOA feeling like my best self, as well as re-energised both mentally and physically. So do your body a favour and enjoy some therapeutic bliss at KOA Recovery.
