Howard’s Cantina is located on the upper level of the Rose of Australia. A very old fashioned corner pub and I would have not expected to find a modern and artsy venue just up the stairs. Upon entering, the restaurant is a wide, open space, with a very nice outside area and a balcony. Behind the bar and on the backs of some of the seating areas are fresh flowers and other plants, which brightens up the room and reflects well onto the food.
The seating areas themselves are very interesting and everybody will be able to find their favourite spot. They vary from comfortable sofas on the balcony, over bar benches and high seats to bistro style chairs. It is a very interesting mix and it makes the atmosphere so much more friendly and customer oriented. The long bar is one of the main features of the restaurant and is staffed with professionals, who make extremely good cocktails.
On the day of the opening, the bar was very crowded and some food had been set up especially for the bloggers to take pictures. All the food looked very delicious and everybody was able to have a taste, due to the canapes that where handed out by waiters. My favourite were the sausage rolls, an all-time Australian favourite. I usually don’t like sausage rolls, however these were filled with a mix of veil and pork and topped off with some aioli, which complemented each other perfectly.
The desert was fantastic as well. It was a lemon cake with a drop of chocolate sauce on top. This made not just the look advertising, but the taste held up as well. However, the restaurant seemed to have underestimated the appetite of the guests and the guests started eating one of the photo displays for the bloggers. However, this should be seen as a great complement for the chef, when the guests can’t even get enough of the tasty decoration.
Everybody who loves food and/or cocktail should pay this very unique location a visit and enjoy the Australian favourites with a modern edge. A DJ will always be there for entertainment and the delicious food and drinks make for a fantastic night out, or date night.Monique Pitzer, born and raised in Germany and came to Australia for the first time in 2008.
