If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, then Sylvia Cameron and her husband Ian have heard your prayers, and are pleased to present the Floating Oyster Wine Bar – which, in a name, should really prepare you for what’s in store. Offering cruises set on the scenic Hawkesbury River, the Floating Oyster Wine Bar is a gorgeous escape from the bustling city life, and a gateway into some of Sydney’s best-kept secrets.
Departing from the Hawkesbury River Marina in Brooklyn, Sylvia and her crew will take you on a leisurely tour of the local river hotspots, past historic sites and stunning landscapes, with the stately pace set by skipper Jay will ensure that even those most sensitive to sea sickness feel perfectly at ease (and I would know!).
Set in a refurbished river barge, the vessel itself is tastefully decked out in what Sylvia cheekily refers to as a ‘pirate-glam’ aesthetic, complete with brass furnishings, comfortable chesterfield couches, and McLaren Vale barrels so fresh you can still smell the red wine on them.
We’re lucky to have local wine merchant Neil on hand to fill us in on all the styles of wine we’re presented with, such as a La Tonnelle Rosè, or a Villa Sandi Prosecco. Neil and Sylvia have also conspired to pair the wines perfectly with the tasting plates served, such as fresh Pacific and Sydney Rock Oysters, or sublime Siberian Reserve Caviar.
The menu is also stacked with local items, such as artisan smoked oysters and hot smoked salmon from the Hawkesbury Oyster Shed, and even more exquisite items for the more discerning epicureans among you, such as the coveted Beluga Caviar. Sylvia is also not afraid to get stuck in and redefine the menu, creating her own unique dishes such as a Russian vodka creme fraiche.
The bar menu is similarly rarified, with European and Australian wines featured alongside unique botanical wines and a rotating selection of craft beers. The bar menu is also able to cater to any requirements, with a robust selection of organic and vegan wines, alongside the single best selection of non-alcoholic wines, beers, and even spirits, that I have ever seen.
The Hawkesbury River itself is a source of unending beauty, with high cliff faces and gorgeous bushland, home to unique wildlife and sights that have to be seen to be believed. The Hawkesbury is home to wildlife that you’re hard pressed to find so close to Sydney, including the majestic white-bellied sea eagle that stopped in to say hello on our cruise, and many more besides.
As sunset falls in a glowing haze over the river and the Bar, it’s hard not to appreciate Sylvia & Ian’s creation for exactly what it is – a perfectly serene, romantic and relaxing experience, that will stay with you for a long time to come.
The Floating Oyster Wine Bar is holding its grand opening this coming Saturday 1st of May, with a unique event to celebrate its inauguration. Regular Sunday cruises will take place each week from 2.30-4.30pm, with a raft of special events already planned for the coming months, such as a Mother’s Day High Tea and a Christmas in July cruise (or several). The Bar is also available for private functions, such as hen’s nights, birthdays, weddings, and photography river safaris.
