Japanese-inspired salad bar FISHBOWL will launch their first store in Armadale, Melbourne on Saturday, January 7th, 2023. The store opening is in partnership with Flying Fox, a youth organisation building connections between people with disability and the community through the power of fun.

The grand opening of the Armadale store will harness a community feel with all proceeds from the day going towards supporting Flying Fox’s programs as they continue to grow. Guests will be able to visit the new store from 11am, where FISHBOWL will also be providing beats, sweets and treats throughout the day.

Over four months in the lead up to the launch, Flying Fox have held two ‘hangouts’ with the group instore side by side with Fishbowl staff taking orders, making bowls, calling on the pass and just simply hanging out with their friends over bowls. The partnership was sparked from the idea of how to utilise FISHBOWL’s reach and community engagement, doing what they can to change fast food and change the culture.

Speaking on how the Flying Fox partnership came to be, Molly Barron, FISHBOWL Prahran Manager notes, “Flying Fox already loved coming to Fishbowl, naturally our teams got talking. To kick things off, we got involved with the Flying Fox ‘hangouts’ for children with disabilities in our stores, from here the relationship solidified, and we wanted to find other ways to support the cause. We’ve hosted a hangout in Docklands and Wesley Place. Both occasions gave them the chance to speak with mentors and get real life experiences in a fun environment.

We also have a few new members off the back of this engagement, and our team have really enjoyed helping the Flying Fox organisation. We look forward to sharing the spotlight with a local community charity, and the Armadale opening allows us to raise further awareness and show some more support for the brilliant work they do. This, is changing the fast food culture.”

Since 2014, Flying Fox has connected youth with special needs with the wider community through exciting youth organised camps and fun-filled experiences. Their mission is to build connections and inspire inclusion, and comprise of a network of volunteer buddies and campers to create positive social interactions in a fun and safe environment.

Aligning with FISHBOWL, the organisation held “hang-outs” in the Victoria stores of Docklands and Wesley Place, with groups learning skills and having fun side by side with the staff. The partnership further led to career opportunities, with Flying Fox member Cameron becoming part of the FISHBOWL family in the Richmond store.

In addition to being a key member of Melbourne’s busiest store, Cameron assists across all other Melbourne venues and helped host FISHBOWL’s second “hang-out” at Wesley Place, with his wheelchair reliant sister Lily making her first ever bowl.

These “hang-outs” were just a fraction of full educational experiences FISHBOWL and Flying Fox have recently arranged, with details of consistent “hang-outs” to come in the future and an ongoing relationship. The fun recreational camps are attended by up to 100 individuals during school holidays, with FISHBOWL continuing to participate on a visiting capacity.

The expansion into Armadale will mark FISHBOWL’s 6th store in Victoria, with plans to continue collaborations with local brands to create unique specials and opportunities exclusive to the area. Pestalozzi further adds, “We believe it’s a great community with lots of families and health-conscious locals who enjoy spending time shopping and eating in the area. There are great existing retail stores, exciting new food options and we want to add our own flavour to High St.”

The partnership between FISHBOWL and Flying Fox will be the first of many in their drive to change the culture through healthy initiatives and give back to communities. The Armadale FISHBOWL store will be open from Saturday 7th January 2023.
