Elite Spinal has become the industry leaders for clinical Pilates in the Eastern Suburbs with over 50 classes now on the timetable. Using a range of Pilates equipment, Elite’s expert physiotherapists are able to work closely with clients to treat an array of conditions from lower back pain to headaches. They run semi-private clinical Pilates sessions with a maximum of four clients per session or private sessions.

Why did they choose to become physiotherapists and open this clinic?

Both owners wanted to become Physiotherapists due to an interest in the human body and a passion for helping people. One thing both owners have in common is they both knew they wanted to become Physiotherapists from their mid-teens after completing high school work experience with local Physiotherapists.

Elisha developed a passion for spinal Physiotherapy after she had a car accident and obtained an injury to her neck and pelvis. She noticed a big difference between general Physiotherapists and others that focus solely on one area of the body. She then directed her postgraduate studies to everything spinal.

Brigitte always had an interest in the spine and in fact even worked in a spine specific Physiotherapy clinic whilst she was studying Physiotherapy. She then went on to work in this clinic after graduating.

Elisha and Brigitte went to uni together and had always said they will start a clinic together. They were both brought up with an entrepreneurial mindset so starting their own clinic was always their goal.

They saw a need for a spinal specific clinic in the Eastern Suburbs so they felt it was the perfect place to open. Both owners are Eastern Suburbs locals.

What are the most common conditions they see and treatment?

The most common conditions we treat are disc bulges, sciatica, general low back pain, facet joint syndrome, thoracic stiffness, scoliosis, neck pain, headaches and post operative rehabilitation.

How does Pilates play a part in the clinic?

Pilates plays a very important role in the clinic. Hands on treatment is useful when it comes to relieving pain and decreasing muscle tension or spinal stiffness. However, the real cure to back pain comes with the strengthening of the deep core muscles, hip stabilisers and spinal stability muscles. Generally, our clients start with one hour private sessions consisting of half exercise using the pilates equipment and half hands on treatment. They then progress to more pilates in a one on one setting and then have the option to join one of our semi-private pilates classes.

What at home treatment/prevention can we take to improve our wellbeing?

Keeping the deep core muscles strong is the key to treating and preventing back pain. Strengthening postural muscles and keeping the spine mobile is the key to treating and preventing neck pain and headaches. Therefore, doing home exercises to strengthen these areas at least 4-5 times per week is ideal. At Elite Spinal we use a app which contains a tailored exercise program which we set up for our clients. It plays a video of the exercise and explains technique and repetitions etc. It even reminds them to do their exercises and tracks their adherence.
