A luxe Sydney hair salon, Christopher Hanna offers an espresso martini on tap whilst you get your hurr done.

But it is not all all blowdries, foils, extensions and balayages. There’s an inviting cocktail lounge with opulent furnishings and expansive brass tones, copper and marble. It was said that interior designer Melissa Collison is responsible for semi-circular design and velvet upholstery in the heritage-listed venue. Although! When I originally scoped out the place, they did have the wash/hair basin near a display of whiskies, rum and gin bottles. But since my last visit, they have removed this. Call me nuts, but that would been a great idea to chill the bottles of champagne on the menu they have.

The venue itself does make you feel a little lush. Whether it is through the main entrance on Bridge St where you get your hair done or through the back entrance on Bridge Lane.

I caught up with Patrick Tully, General Manager of Christopher Hanna Bar who’s passionate all things liquids and what he aims to bring to the venue.

How would you describe in three words the vibes of Sydney’s newest small bar and all it wants to achieve? It’s intimate and indulgent. The whole space is designed as a kind of one-stop-shop in treating yourself. In terms of what we want to achieve, we want to be the place you go when you want to treat yourself, have heaps of fun and feel special. We want every guest to know that when they walk through those door, they are somewhere special.

Are we a speakeasy hidden bar to be known for its’ classic cocktails and champagnes? I don’t think we really fit into the Speakeasy mold, and nor did we ever want to. I think we have more in common with the Old World Hotel Bars or French Salon bars. Somewhere you can go and enjoy the finer things in life, enjoy an private, intimate setting and indulge in good conversation.

The synergy of the salon and bar/lounge? How does it connect or flow? They compliment each other perfectly while never getting in each others way. The bar is located almost exactly in the centre of the venue and is able to cater to guests in both the Salon and the Lounge. It’s really amazing to be able to value add to either experience. Working your way through a cocktail list while you get a world-class Balayage is pretty special. So is booking a corporate event and being able to offer your guests a quick blow-dry or razor shave.

What’s on the menu? But more importantly what would we recommend.

  • Burrata with fennel & hazelnut relish, sourdough ($14)
  • Chicken liver parfait with cherry & port jelly ($12)
  • Antipasto (serves 2-3) selection of meats, cheese and marinated vegetables ($36)

Someone needs to let me know how the Four Cheese Toastie, Croque Monsieur and the Caviar tastes.

  • Old Fashioned: with Buffalo Trace Bourbon ($19)
  • Rob Roy: with Dewar’s White Label Scotch ($19)
  • Western Union: blend using Cognac, Calvados served neat with smoke ($21)
  • Blaze of Glory: Apple Bourbon, smoked maple served with fire ($20)
  • Whisky: Glendronnach 18yr ($20), Glenlivet Nadurra Oloroso ($20), Sullivans Cove Double Cask ($28)

What’s the verdict? I honestly cannot tell you about the salon as I haven’t tried it yet. I’m sure they are very talented and probably have a heart attack if they saw my hair. But, what I can say is about the lounge bar. Yes, I would definitely return but with a group of friends and order a bottle of whisky, caviar and the antipasto again.

Not like any bar I know in Sydney’s CBD – you are only limited by your imagination on the type of drink you are wanting and the experience you think you can afford.
