Bartiga, Double Bay

Nestled in the heart of Double Bay, Bartiga shines as a fantastic lunch spot, especially when dining alfresco under the warm Sydney sun. My recent visit revealed a thoughtfully curated menu, delightful cocktails, and a relaxed yet lively atmosphere that makes it a must-visit. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with a touch of understated elegance—think natural timber accents, soft neutral tones, and lush greenery that creates a breezy, open-air feel. Co-founded by Charlie Kelly and renowned Head Chef Faheem Noor. While a couple of service hiccups occurred, the overall experience was enjoyable, and I’m already planning my next visit.

Bartiga’s menu showcases a modern Australian approach infused with the vibrant flavours of Southeast Asia. Its distinct focus is on fresh, high-quality seafood and seasonal produce. Drawing inspiration from both local ingredients and global flavours, the dishes balance creativity and simplicity. Each plate highlights the natural beauty of its ingredients, enhanced by thoughtful touches like yuzu, truffle oil, and calamansi.

Entrées: A Taste of the Sea

We began with a selection of Appellation Oysters, opting for both classic and trout roe varieties. Despite a minor mix-up—we received four classic oysters instead of the requested two—the oysters were fresh, briny, and paired beautifully with a rice wine mignonette that added a delicate, tangy kick.

The Lightly Torched Scallop arrived next, nestled in a buttermilk bath with hints of yuzu kosho and drizzled with truffle oil. While we anticipated two pieces, the single scallop was flawlessly prepared—creamy, subtly sweet, and perfectly balanced by the umami-rich truffle notes.

A standout was the Kingfish Crudo, adorned with a zesty Nam Jim dressing, crispy shallots, and fresh coriander. Each bite was a burst of flavour: the silky fish paired harmoniously with the vibrant, slightly spicy dressing.

Mains: Seasonal and Satisfying

Our main course journey had a minor detour—the Grilled Market Fish (Red Snapper) wasn’t initially ordered but was graciously prepared. The wait was worth it. The snapper was tender, with crispy skin and a refreshing calamansi vinaigrette that cut through the richness. Seasonal vegetables complemented the dish, adding texture and freshness.

The Bartiga Garden Salad surprised us by arriving early, alongside the entrées. Nonetheless, it was a robust and well-composed dish. The mix of leaves, broccolini, crispy artichokes, baby eggplants, and roasted sweet potatoes created a medley of flavours and textures. Pepitas added a satisfying crunch, while the house green goddess dressing tied everything together with a creamy, herbaceous finish.

Dessert & Drinks: A Sweet Farewell

To end on a high note, we indulged in the Calamansi Tart. The silky citrus curd, topped with Italian meringue and calamansi caramel, offered a perfect balance of tartness and sweetness—light, refreshing, and a perfect palate cleanser.

The cocktail menu was also impressive. The House Spritz—a blend of elderflower, limoncello, yuzu soda, and prosecco—was a bubbly, floral delight, while the Bartiga Martini (featuring vodka, apricot brandy, blood peach, and mint) was both refreshing and sophisticated.

Side note, there’s Happy Hour from Thursday to Sunday, from 4pm – 6pm. That’s $14 cocktails, $9 vino, $7 beers. Double Bay $99 Weekend Bottomless Brunch, featuring free-flowing drinks and a share-style banquet menu. Enjoy Tommy’s margs, Selected wines, and Estrella tap beer.

Bartiga offers a relaxed yet refined dining experience, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely alfresco lunch. The quality of the food and the inviting atmosphere ensure that I’ll be returning soon—and I highly recommend you do, too.
