Yes, it is possible to find a reasonable place in Brisbane without compromising on style, scene or on location.
Joining the ranks from its Melbourne properties, The Punthill Brisbane in Spring Hill does not disappoint and honours its spacious serviced apartment accommodation. With pops of colour and animated bird drawings on their wallpaper, much like in the lobby and the sea-green couch in the lobby an following in each of the guest rooms. The rest of the decor is a mashup of earthly tones for the two-seater couch and textured ottomans, all of which comes to together to provide a warmly home.
But aside the quirks, what you can expect are stylish studios in taupe, charcoal and ivory tones, central location and competitive prices.
Located in Astor Terrace, Spring Hill it’s only a few minutes’ walk to the heart of Brisbane’s CBD. Given the rising of AirBNB and apartment-hotel trend, the concept of Punthill provides a gathering place for “urban explorers” looking to not just stay the night, but for a couple of nights or even a week.
Features include a luxurious king bed, a private balcony with your vary own birdcage, kitchen, chic workspace, flat screen TV, iPod dock and secure undercover parking. There are multiple public spaces, including a rooftop pool and terrace for those summer days, open air gym to work a sweat, BBQ pavillion, a savvy lounge to encourage creativity – to the retro bicycles available for hire.
Before I forget for those who love to cook. The kitchenette is a decent size with all the essentials. European appliances, hot plate, fridge, microwave, plates, cutlery to the mixing bowl and other cooking utensils. This is perfect with you want to cosy up inside with room service, cook your own or bring food back. Otherwise all day dining is provided in one of Brisbane’s funkiest restaurant and bar, Jak + Hill.
Unlike some hotels that generally offers buffet breakfast, here it’s cooked to order. Top picks would be the Avocado & Persian Feta Smash, Belgian Waffles or even Jak’s Benedit to the Breakfast board.
As I was staying just for the night, the perfect choice was to check out the dinner menu (it’s the same for lunch). Very reasonably prices from $18 for a decent meal.
Opting for a sharing board, Jak’s Mezze Board ($19.60) included cured meats, grilled vegetables, olives, feta with toasted bread. For $26 and a gluten free option, the Pan Fried Salmon with capers, Kipfler potato smash sitting on a salad bed with orange and watercress. From The Mighty Mighty burger ($21.50), Pulled Pork Sandwich ($19), Pumpkin Risotto ($18) to the 250g Scotch Fillet ($32), there is enough choices for everyone. Speaking of choices, the other dish ordered was the Confit Duck leg. Ok, the image didn’t do it justice, but its tasted great. Goats cheese, beetroot, walnuts, apple, roquette, drenched with green peppercorn sauce. My advice to Chef, easy on the sauce – perhaps have the sauce in a ramekin and maybe a little plate presentation.
With all the food, luckily the choices for dessert were slim (in choices that is). From the Croissant Bread & Butter Pudding with rum & raisin ice-cream, Lemon Curt Tart served with honey mascarpone and compote to the World’s Best Brownie. With a statement like that, we had to share the sugar load on this one. With with Lindt chocolate, berry compote, praline and topped off with a toffee caramel ice-cream.
What I love about this property is the convenience getting to places. Located just a short walk away from Central train station, 900 metres to Queen St Mall, Fortitude Valley, public transport and river ferries.
A service-forward boutique (can I call it boutique?) with knockout customer service, spacious rooms and a neighbourhood to match, makes it easy to forget that you’re in an outer borough without burning your budget (your wallet will thank you later).
There’s always something interesting going on in Brisbane and Punthill is a great place to stay with your family for the weekend, or with mates during the week for an event. Corporate travellers and long stay guests, we haven’t forgotten about you – where can you find decent size room, its here.
